Description

Dzongkha or Bhutanese is spoken by about 130,000 people in Bhutan, a country in South Asia, where it is the national language. Learn Dzongkha with its traditional form and modern sounds. A South Tibetic language closely related to Sikkimese, and to a number of other languages spoken in Bhutan, such as Chocangaca, Brokpa, Brokkat and Lakha, the language is written with the Tibetan alphabet.

The word “Dzongkha” roughly translates to “the language of the palace.” The Bhutan name for their country is Druk Yul which means “Land of the Thunder Dragon”. Druk, the thunder dragon is the national symbol for Bhutan, even appearing on their flag. It is a part of Bhutanese mythology. The leaders in Bhutan are called Druk Gyalpo, or Dragon Kings. Immerse yourself in the language of the “Land of the Thunder Dragons”.

Bhutan is every environmentalist’s dream! The Dzongkha people work diligently to do their part for the environment’s well-being. Bhutan was the first country in the world to constitutionally obligate their people to protect their Earth. Additionally, anyone who is found guilty of killing the sacred and endangered black-necked crane can be sentenced to prison for life. Bhutan has even banned the production and sales of all tobacco products throughout the country!

Bhutan is a very young country from an age standpoint. Almost one-third of the Bhutanese people are under 14. Bhutanese children receive 100% free schooling from the government with an emphasis on Buddhist teachings. This comes after a government initiative in the 1990s after it was revealed that no more than 40% of the population were literate.
